Tasmania is the perfect self drive destination. While it may appear small in comparison to mainland Australia, don’t be fooled into thinking you can cover it all in a very short time. The scenery is so diverse and the attractions so plentiful, that you could easily spend weeks exploring and still not see it all. The following itinerary is an example only, we will happily help plan alternatives to suit your wishes.

Day 1: Launceston

Fly into Launceston or catch the Spirit of Tasmania ferry to Devonport. Collect yourrental car or motorhome and spend the remainder of the day exploring Launceston.Highlights include Cataract Gorge, Penny Royal World and a cruise on the Tamar River.

Day 2: Launceston to Freycinet National Park - 280 kms, 4 hrs 15 mins

Follow the Wine Route north along the Tamar River, then continue via George Town, Bridport, Scottsdale and Derby to the East Coast. Head south, stopping at Bicheno to meet Tasmanian Devils, wombats, quolls & koalas at the Birdlife & Animal Park.

Day 3: Freycinet National Park

A full day to explore Freycinet National Park with its striking granite peaks, white sandy beaches and rocky foreshores.

Day 4: Freycinet to Port Arthur - 280 kms, 4 hrs

Continue south following the coastline south to the Tasman Peninsula. At Eaglehawk Neck see the natural wonders such as the Devil’s Kitchen and Tasman Arch. Explore the Port Arthur Historic Site, take a ghost tour or cruise around ‘The Isle of the Dead’.

Day 5: Port Arthur to Hobart - 100 kms, 1 hr 30 mins

Head north-west via the delightful Georgian village of Richmond with its antique shops, art & craft galleries and charming tea rooms.

Day 6: Hobart

Hobart attractions include superb views from Mt Wellington. Get a self-guided walking map to explore Hobart’s heritage buildings. Visit the Cadbury chocolate factory or Cascade Brewery. Take an evening ghost tour or explore the Salamanca Saturday Markets.

Day 7: Hobart to Strahan - 280 kms, 4 hrs

Follow the Derwent Valley to historic New Norfolk then on to Mt Field National Park for a short walk to spectacular Russell Falls. Drive through the wilderness area surrounding Lake St Clair and the bare hills of Queenstown to the waterfront town of Strahan.

Day 8: Strahan to Cradle Mountain - 160 kms, 2 hrs 15 mins

Take a Gordon River Cruise then on to World Heritage Listed Cradle Valley.

Day 9: Cradle Mountain

Take a scenic flight over the wilderness or enjoy a superb short walk from Dove Lake or Waldheim.

Day 10: Cradle Mountain to Launceston - 140 kms, 2 hrs

Time permitting make a detour north-west to Stanley and the striking feature ‘The Nut’, or take a leisurely drive back to Devonport or Launceston for your onward travel.
